About Royal Fortress of Chinon
The Royal Fortress of Chinon sits on a rocky promontory above the Vienne River, consisting of three separate medieval castles joined together: Fort Saint-Georges, Château du Milieu, and Château du Coudray. The site has been fortified for over 3,000 years, but the current structures date primarily from the 10th to 15th centuries. Henry II Plantagenet made Chinon the centre of his continental empire in the 12th century, and it was here that Joan of Arc met the Dauphin Charles VII in 1429, a turning point in the Hundred Years' War.

In 2001, a document known as the "Chinon Parchment" was discovered in the Vatican Secret Archives. It proved that Pope Clement V had secretly absolved Jacques de Molay and other Templar leaders at this fortress in 1308, before they were publicly condemned and burned at the stake. The document had been misfiled and hidden for nearly 700 years.
