About Arromanches-les-Bains Church of Saint-Peter
This neo-Romanesque church stands on Place du Général de Gaulle in the center of Arromanches-les-Bains. Built between 1857 and 1870 by architects Alphonse Delauney and Martial Pelfresne, it replaced a 13th-century church that had become too small as the fishing village grew into a seaside resort. The tall bell tower was destroyed on July 9, 1944, by a British naval shell targeting German forces during the D-Day operations, and later rebuilt.

The 1948 stained glass window depicting sailors offering ex-votos includes a subtle tribute to Franco-British cooperation during WWII. The French sailor is identifiable by details associated with the battleship Richelieu, while the English sailor displays the "HMS" (Her Majesty's Ship) ribbon, commemorating the allied forces who liberated Normandy.
