About Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame of Mantes-la-Jolie
Often called the Little Sister of Notre-Dame de Paris, the Collegiale Notre-Dame de Mantes-la-Jolie is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Ile-de-France region. Built between 1155 and 1350 with the patronage of the Capetian kings, the church rises majestically above the banks of the Seine with its harmonious two-tower facade and soaring nave reaching nearly 30 metres in height.

The church was built on the site of an earlier building destroyed during the 1087 siege of Mantes by William the Conqueror. According to legend, William laughed at the burning town from horseback, but his horse stumbled on the hot embers, causing injuries that led to his death shortly after in Rouen.
