The collection traces an unbroken line back to 1626, when Louis XIII established a "Royal Drug Cabinet" of minerals believed to have healing properties. This cabinet evolved through centuries into one of the world's largest mineralogical collections, now holding over 770,000 specimens including 138,000 minerals and gems.
