La Ménagerie is the zoo within Paris's Jardin des Plantes, established in 1794 during the French Revolution, making it the second oldest zoo in the world after Vienna's Schönbrunn. 5 hectares in the heart of the 5th arrondissement and houses around 500 animals from 150 species, with nearly 40% classified as endangered. Operated by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN), it functions as both a public zoo and a conservation research center.

Nénette, a Bornean orangutan born around 1969, has lived at the Ménagerie since 1972 and is one of the ten oldest orangutans in the world. She is known for painting, cleaning her enclosure glass with a cloth, and flipping through magazines. French filmmaker Nicolas Philibert made a documentary about her in 2010.
