About Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy Gallery
The Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy is part of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, located at the eastern edge of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris's 5th arrondissement. Designed by architect Ferdinand Dutert and inaugurated in 1898, the building features exposed iron beams and high glass ceilings in the Art Nouveau style. The ground floor houses nearly 1,000 vertebrate skeletons arranged to illustrate anatomical similarities across species, including a 20-meter fin whale skeleton and specimens of the extinct Steller's sea cow.

Architect Ferdinand Dutert originally planned the gallery to be 320 meters long — four times its actual 80-meter length. Budget constraints and construction challenges forced the project to be scaled down dramatically, yet the completed section still contains over 11,000 specimens.
