About Marmottan Monet Museum
The Marmottan Monet Museum holds the world's largest collection of Claude Monet paintings, with over 100 works spanning his entire career from early Argenteuil landscapes to the late Water Lilies series. Located in a former hunting lodge in Paris's 16th arrondissement near the Bois de Boulogne, the building was converted into a museum in 1934 after collector Paul Marmottan bequeathed his Napoleonic-era art collection to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The museum's identity shifted dramatically in 1966 when Michel Monet, the painter's son, donated his father's personal collection, including monumental canvases that required construction of a purpose-built underground gallery.

On 27 October 1985, five masked gunmen entered the museum in broad daylight and stole nine Impressionist paintings valued at roughly $20 million, including "Impression, Sunrise." The works were recovered five years later in a villa in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica, and returned to display in 1991.
