About Montmartre
Perched atop a 130-meter hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement, Montmartre is one of the most iconic and atmospheric neighborhoods in the world. Its cobblestone streets, sweeping views over the city, and the gleaming white domes of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica have made it a symbol of Paris itself. Yet beyond the postcard imagery lies a neighborhood of extraordinary depth: a place where Roman temples once stood, where Christian martyrs were executed, where the Jesuit order was born, and where the underground gypsum mines that gave "plaster of Paris" its name still honeycomb the earth beneath the streets.

The name Montmartre most likely derives from the Latin Mons Martyrum, meaning "Mountain of the Martyrs." It honors Saint Denis, the first Bishop of Paris, who was beheaded on the hill by Roman authorities around 250 AD. According to legend, after his decapitation, Denis picked up his head and walked several kilometers north to the spot where the Basilica of Saint-Denis now stands.
