The Maison Romane likely served as a rabbinical school or synagogue in the medieval Jewish quarter of Provins before the expulsion of Jews from France in the 14th century. The building later passed to Pierre d'Orgemont, a converted Jew whose son became Chancellor of France in 1373 — one of the highest offices in the kingdom.
