About Provins Rose Garden
5-hectare garden at the foot of Provins' medieval upper town, created in 2008 by local horticulturist Bruno Clergeot on the site of an abandoned plant nursery. The garden holds over 450 rose varieties organized by botanical families — Galliques, Alba, Centifolia, Bourbon, Portland, Noisette, and modern hybrids — with more than 1,500 bushes along thematic paths. It received the Jardin Remarquable label from the French Ministry of Culture in 2014, renewed in 2021.

Thibaud IV, Count of Champagne and troubadour poet, reportedly brought the Rosa gallica officinalis from the Holy Land around 1240. The dried petals of this rose retained their scent for years, which made Provins a major medieval trading center for rose-based medicines, perfumes, and preserved confections. By the 14th century, Provins' apothecaries were producing rose water, rose oil, and conserves of rose petals sold across Europe.
