About Grange aux Dîmes
The Grange aux Dîmes is a 13th-century stone merchant house in the upper town of Provins, originally built as a covered commercial hall for the Champagne Fairs. The building belonged to the Chapter of Saint-Quiriace, which leased it to merchants — a rental agreement from 1223 records Toulouse traders as tenants. The three-story structure served distinct purposes: ground-floor storage for merchandise, a first-floor trading hall, and upper living quarters for merchants or their agents.

The stone corbels projecting from the exterior facade are not decorative — they once anchored temporary wooden or canvas awning structures erected during the 6-to-8-week fair periods, extending the retail space directly onto the street. This practical detail reveals how the building was designed to maximize commercial frontage during peak trading season.
