About Holy Spirit Cellar
The Caveau du Saint-Esprit is a 12th-century Romanesque vaulted cellar beneath the former Holy Spirit Hospital, founded in 1177 by Count Henry I of Champagne as a shelter for the poor and pilgrims. The hospital above was destroyed by fire in the 16th century, leaving this underground hall as the sole surviving remnant of the complex. The cellar consists of nine bays divided into two sections, supported by columns with carved capitals typical of Romanesque civil architecture.

Exterior Viewing Only
This attraction can only be viewed from the outside. Interior access is not available.
The cellar has a dual heritage classification that reflects the different quality of its two sections. The six southern bays received full classification (Classé Monument Historique) in 1937, while the three northern bays only received the lower "listed" status (Inscrit) in 1968. This split classification is unusual for a single building and suggests the southern portion may be older or better preserved.
