About Ramparts of Provins
The Ramparts of Provins are medieval fortifications encircling the upper town, built primarily between 1226 and 1236 under Count Thibaut IV of Champagne. 2 km survives today, featuring 22 towers of varied shapes — round, rectangular, almond-shaped, octagonal, and hexagonal. Two fortified gates remain: Porte Saint-Jean, the main entrance flanked by round towers, and Porte de Jouy on the eastern side, where visitors can climb to a wall-top walkway with views over the rooftops.

The 22 towers packed into just 1.2 km of wall means there is a tower roughly every 55 metres — an exceptionally dense defensive arrangement by medieval standards. The towers come in round, rectangular, almond-shaped, octagonal, hexagonal, and trapezoidal forms, making this one of the few fortification circuits in France to display the full repertoire of medieval military tower design in a single stretch.
