About Royal Tennis Court
The Royal Tennis Court (Salle du Jeu de Paume) is one of France's most historically significant sites, located a short walk from the Palace of Versailles. Built in 1686 for the royal sport of jeu de paume, an ancestor of modern tennis, it became the birthplace of French constitutional democracy on June 20, 1789, when 578 deputies of the Third Estate gathered here and swore the famous Tennis Court Oath, pledging not to disband until a new constitution was established.
