About The Royal Opera
The Royal Opera at the Palace of Versailles is a late 18th-century theater designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, inaugurated on 16 May 1770 for the wedding celebrations of the future Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. At the time of its opening, it was the largest concert hall in Europe, seating approximately 700 spectators. The oval auditorium is built almost entirely of wood painted to resemble marble, a technique that produces exceptional acoustics.
