About Our Lady of Versailles Church
Notre-Dame de Versailles is a French Classical parish church designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Louis XIV's chief architect, and built between 1684 and 1686. The king ordered its construction after permanently moving the royal court to Versailles in 1682, when the existing church of Saint-Julien could no longer serve the rapidly growing population. The interior features a Doric order throughout, barrel-vaulted nave of three bays, a dome on pendentives at the transept crossing, and lateral chapels along continuous side aisles.
