About Notre-Dame Market Square
Place du Marché Notre-Dame is the central market square of Versailles, located in the oldest quarter of the city. King Louis XIII established the market here in 1634, and Louis XIV expanded it from 1671 to supply the growing population around his new palace. The square features four covered market halls built in 1842 by architect Ernest Le Poittevin, renovated between 1985 and 1991, housing around 35 permanent vendors selling cheese, charcuterie, seafood, meats, and prepared foods.

The four original market squares each had a specialized purpose that persists today: the Carré à la Viande for meat, Carré à la Farine for flour and grains, Carré aux Herbes for herbs and vegetables, and Carré de la Marée for seafood. This 17th-century organization into distinct product zones still shapes how vendors are arranged across the halls.
