About Savonnières Village
Savonnières is a small village of about 3,400 residents on the north bank of the Cher river, 15 km southwest of Tours. The settlement dates back over a million years, with Acheulean and Neanderthal tool sites documented in the area. Its name derives from the Latin "Saponaria," linked to a Roman-era soap mill that operated on a local stream.

In the 8th and 9th centuries, silver coins (deniers) bearing the images of Saints Gervais and Protais were minted in Savonnières. A cache of these coins was discovered in 1865 inside a chalk vessel, making the village one of the few small settlements in medieval France known to have operated its own mint.
