About Domaine de Candé
The Domaine de Candé is a 16th-century estate set within 230 hectares of parkland about 10 km south of Tours, in the commune of Monts. The château was originally built in 1508 for François Briçonnet, Mayor of Tours, then extensively expanded in Neo-Gothic style during the 1850s by Santiago Drake Del Castillo, who added electricity, central heating, and corner towers. In 1927, Franco-American industrialist Charles Bedaux purchased the property and modernized it with cutting-edge amenities including a private telephone exchange, a three-storey Skinner pipe organ, and a sports hall.

Charles Bedaux earned the nickname 'domain of engineers' for Candé because his 1920s-30s renovations were so technologically advanced. The estate had one of France's earliest private telephone exchanges capable of worldwide calls, rapid-fill bathtubs, heated towel rails, and sophisticated water management systems — amenities rare even in luxury hotels of the era.
