About Montbazon Fortress
The Montbazon Fortress sits on a rocky spur above the Indre Valley, 15 km south of Tours. Its stone keep, built from 991 AD by Foulques III Nerra, Count of Anjou, is the oldest standing stone donjon in France. The 36-metre tower with 3-metre thick walls was later expanded by Geoffroi Martel in 1050 and transformed into a full fortress complex by Henri II Plantagenet in 1175.

The fortress's origin story involves feudal theft. Foulques Nerra seized the hilltop from the monks of Cormery Abbey, who protested to the King of France. The king did nothing, and the castle was built on the stolen land. Foulques went on to construct roughly 50 castles, churches, and monasteries across the Loire Valley during his lifetime.
