About Montbazon Old Town
Montbazon's old town sits at the foot of a rocky promontory crowned by the oldest stone keep in France, built by Foulques Nerra in 991. The compact historic center clusters around Place André Delaunay and Rue des Moulins, where 15th and 16th-century half-timbered houses line a street leading to the Porte des Moulins — the only surviving medieval gate from 1471. A narrow lane called Ruelle des Anges passes under a timber-framed building from the 1500s before opening onto the main square.

The town's only surviving medieval gate, the Porte des Moulins, originally had four counterparts protecting different approaches to the settlement. The other three were demolished during the Revolution in 1790, while this one lost only its upper section. Two round arches separated by a slot for a portcullis are still visible in the stonework.
