About Tours Basilica of Saint-Martin
The Basilica of Saint-Martin stands on one of the oldest Christian pilgrimage sites in Western Europe, where Saint Martin of Tours was buried in 397 AD. The original medieval basilica was one of the largest churches in Christendom before Huguenots damaged it in 1562 and revolutionaries demolished it in 1793. The current Neo-Byzantine church was built between 1886 and 1924, designed by Victor Laloux, the same architect behind the Gare d'Orsay in Paris.

The English word "chapel" traces back directly to Saint Martin. After his death, fragments of his cloak (cappa in Latin) were kept as sacred relics by Frankish kings, who carried them into battle in a portable shrine called a capella. That word gave us both "chapel" and "chaplain."
