About Hôtel Goüin
The Hôtel Goüin is a Renaissance townhouse built around 1490-1510 in the heart of Tours, on what was once the city's main commercial street. The south facade is one of the finest examples of early French Renaissance architecture, combining late Gothic tracery with Italian decorative elements such as putti, candelabra motifs, and oval medallions. During the June 1940 fire that devastated central Tours, the interior was destroyed while the ornate stone facade survived almost intact.

Honoré de Balzac featured this building in his 1831 novel Maître Cornélius, attributing its construction to a fictional royal moneychanger during the reign of Louis XI. This literary invention misled historians for decades, and the building was long associated with Balzac's character rather than its actual owners.
