About Museum of Craftsmanship
The Musée du Compagnonnage in Tours is the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to the French tradition of compagnonnage — a centuries-old system of craft guilds where apprentices travel across France to master their trade. Housed in the former dormitories of the 12th-century Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Julien, the museum displays over 400 masterpieces across 30 different trades, from carpentry and stone masonry to locksmithing and pastry-making. Each masterpiece was created by an apprentice as proof of skill to gain full membership in the guild.

In 2010, UNESCO inscribed the French compagnonnage tradition on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is one of only a handful of French traditions to hold this distinction, alongside gastronomy and equestrian art.
