About Grand Theatre of Tours
The Grand Théâtre de Tours, also known as the Opéra de Tours, is an Italian-style opera house on rue de la Scellerie in central Tours. The current building dates from 1889, designed by architect Stanislas Loison after a fire destroyed the previous theatre in 1883. Its Beaux-Arts facade features sculptural work by Frédéric-Charles Combarieu, while the interior houses allegorical ceiling paintings by Georges Clairin depicting Apollo, Dance, Comedy, Music, and Tragedy.

The theatre stands on the site of a former Franciscan (Cordeliers) church. In 1791, a citizen named Bûcheron purchased the disused church and converted it into an 800-seat performance hall, with the first show taking place on 30 December 1796 during the Revolutionary period.
