About La Psalette Cloister
The Psalette Cloister sits alongside the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien in central Tours, built between the 15th and 16th centuries to house the cathedral's chapter of canons and their singing school. Three of the original four galleries survive, displaying a visible shift from Flamboyant Gothic on the ground floor to Renaissance decoration on the upper levels. The highlight is a finely carved Renaissance spiral staircase connecting the galleries to a vaulted library that once held one of the richest manuscript collections in France.

The word "psalette" comes from the Latin "psallere" (to sing psalms) and the Greek "psallô" (to vibrate strings). It referred to a choir school where boys received musical and religious education — an institution type that no longer exists in France, making the cloister a rare physical reminder of this medieval tradition.
