About Tours Castle
The Château de Tours is a medieval royal castle on the banks of the Loire, built on foundations dating back to a Roman-era thermal bath complex from the 1st century. The main structure was constructed under Philippe Auguste and Philip III between 1214 and 1280, featuring the 25-metre Tour de Guise tower. After centuries serving as military barracks, the castle was classified as a Monument Historique in 1913 and transferred to the City of Tours in 1968.

The Tour de Guise gets its name from Duke Charles I of Guise, who was imprisoned in the tower during the 16th-century Wars of Religion and managed to escape by climbing down the outside wall. The dramatic escape became one of the most famous prison break stories of the French Renaissance.
