About Museum of Fine Arts of Tours
The Museum of Fine Arts of Tours occupies the former Episcopal Palace, a building with roots dating to the 4th century that was classified as a Historic Monument in 1983. The palace stands beside the Cathedral of Tours on Place François Sicard, with formal French gardens featuring a Cedar of Lebanon planted in 1804. The permanent collection holds around 18,000 works spanning antiquity to contemporary art, with roughly 1,000 on display at any time.

The two Mantegna predella panels in Tours came from the San Zeno Altarpiece in Verona, widely considered the first Renaissance altarpiece of Northern Italy. Napoleon's troops seized the panels in 1797, and after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 only the main panels were returned to Verona — the three predella pieces stayed in France. Tours holds two (The Prayer in the Garden of Olives and The Resurrection), while the Louvre holds the central Crucifixion.
