About Plumereau Square
Place Plumereau is the central square of Old Tours and one of the best-preserved examples of medieval urban architecture in France. The pedestrianized square is lined with 15th-century half-timbered houses featuring elaborate geometric timber-frame patterns on their facades. Originally a small crossroads called Carroi aux Chapeaux (Hat Crossroads), the square was expanded between 1860 and 1912 through demolition of surrounding buildings.

The square was named on 18 November 1888 after Charles Plumereau, a municipal councillor who bequeathed 3,000 francs to the city specifically for building secular schools. Before that, it went through at least five different names over the centuries, including Carroi aux Chapeaux (Hat Crossroads), Place aux Fruits, and Place Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier.
