About Tours Clock Tower
The Tour de l'Horloge is one of two surviving towers from the medieval Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours, once among the most important pilgrimage sites in Western Europe. Originally called the Tour du Trésor (Treasury Tower), it served as the southern tower of the basilica's western facade. Construction spanned three centuries — the ground floor dates to the 11th century, with additions in the 12th and 13th centuries, blending Romanesque and Gothic elements.

The tower was saved from demolition purely for practical reasons — the neighborhood needed a structure to hang a market bell and clock. Its survival had nothing to do with historical preservation, which didn't exist as a concept in France until decades later.
