About Saint-Germain-en-Laye

Royal Heritage

The Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye has served as a royal residence since Louis VI built the first fortress here in 1124. François I commissioned the elegant Renaissance reconstruction in 1539, and Louis XIV was born within its walls before eventually moving the court to Versailles. The Gothic Chapelle Saint-Louis, built by Louis IX around 1238, is an architectural masterpiece that once housed a relic of the Crown of Thorns.
