The Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye is a magnificent royal residence that has witnessed centuries of French history. Originally built as a fortress in the 12th century by Louis VI, it was transformed into an elegant Renaissance palace by François I in the 16th century. The château served as the principal royal residence before Versailles, and it was here that Louis XIV was born in 1638.
