About Saint-Germain Church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye
This neoclassical parish church stands on Place Charles de Gaulle, on a site where four successive churches have been built since King Robert the Pious founded a priory here around 1020. The current building was completed between 1766 and 1829, designed in an Early Christian basilica style with a facade of six Tuscan columns and a triangular pediment. Inside, fifty frescoes by Amaury-Duval (a student of Ingres) cover the nave and apse walls, painted between 1849 and 1857.

The church is oriented toward the royal château rather than facing east, which breaks standard liturgical convention. This unusual alignment was a deliberate choice by Louis XV, who wanted the building to face the royal residence instead of following traditional church orientation.
