About Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye
The Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is a 3,540-hectare state forest managed by the ONF (Office National des Forêts), located 20 km west of Paris in a bend of the River Seine. It served as a royal hunting ground for French kings from Charlemagne through Louis XIV, who was born at the adjacent Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1638. The forest features 54 km of marked hiking trails, 70 km of equestrian paths, and several cycling routes through predominantly oak and beech woodland.

Louis XIV ordered the construction of a 34 km stone wall around the entire forest to contain deer and wild boar for royal hunts and prevent poaching. Remnants of this wall, built in the late 17th century, can still be found along the southern and eastern edges of the forest.
