About Abbey of Notre-Dame de Déols
The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Déols is a ruined Benedictine monastery founded in 917, located in the commune of Déols just north of Châteauroux in the Indre department. At its peak, the abbey church stretched 113 meters long with seven bell towers, making it one of the largest religious buildings in medieval France. Today only fragments of the Romanesque and Gothic structure survive, including one bell tower, cloister arcades, and the 13th-century monks' kitchen.

The abbey's first abbot was Bernon, who simultaneously served as the founding abbot of Cluny. When Bernon died in 927, he entrusted both Déols and Cluny to his disciple Odo, meaning the two most important Benedictine abbeys in France shared the same leader for decades.
