About Saint Andrew's Church of Châteauroux
Saint Andrew's Church is the principal parish church of Châteauroux, built in neo-Gothic style between 1869 and 1876 by departmental architect Alfred Dauvergne. The building replaced a medieval church demolished during the French Revolution in 1794, and its proportions rival those of a cathedral — 87 metres long with twin spires reaching 68 metres. Inside, visitors can admire stained glass windows from the Lobin workshop in Tours, 18th-century paintings donated by General Bertrand (a close companion of Napoleon), and a carved preaching pulpit depicting the Virgin and the four Evangelists.

Construction of the church was attempted twice. The first project began in 1843 under architect André Bisson, but was abandoned in 1848 when the Revolution of that year halted public works and sparked disputes over the building site. The second attempt started 21 years later, 40 metres from the original location, and was further delayed by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.
