About Parc Balsan
5-hectare English-style landscaped park on the banks of the Indre River in southern Châteauroux, occupying the grounds of the former Balsan textile dynasty's estate. The site dates back to 1751 when King Louis XV established a Royal Cloth Manufacture here, later purchased by Jean-Pierre Balsan in 1856. Architect Alfred Dauvergne designed the park in the 1860s at the request of Pierre Balsan, preserving the mature trees already on the grounds.

The Balsan factory produced the famous "bleu horizon" cloth — the distinctive horizon-blue fabric used for all French Army uniforms during World War I. At its peak, the factory's 60,000 square meters of workshops employed hundreds of workers and was one of the most modern textile operations in Europe.
