About Church of Saint-Martin de Vic
This small 11th-12th century Romanesque church in the village of Vic, near Nohant-Vic, holds one of France's most complete cycles of medieval wall paintings. The frescoes, painted around 1130-1150 by an anonymous artist known as the "Master of Vic," cover the nave, choir, and apse with approximately 20 biblical scenes including the Nativity, the Passion of Christ, and episodes from the life of Saint Martin. Created using just four mineral pigments — charcoal black, lime white, red ochre, and yellow ochre — the paintings were hidden under layers of plaster for centuries until a parish priest rediscovered them in 1849.

George Sand nicknamed the church "the small Sistine Chapel of Berry" after seeing the frescoes in 1849. Local tourism authorities still use this designation today, and the comparison gives a sense of the ambition and scale of the paintings relative to the tiny village setting.
