About George Sand Estate
The George Sand Estate in Nohant-Vic is an 18th-century country house where the French novelist Aurore Dupin, known as George Sand, lived for most of her life and wrote the majority of her literary works. Her grandmother Marie-Aurore de Saxe purchased the property in 1793 and redesigned both the gardens and the main stone staircase. George Sand inherited the estate in 1821 and spent every summer here from May to November until her death in 1876.

George Sand and her son Maurice ran a private puppet theater at the estate from 1847 to 1875, staging over 200 original plays. Maurice hand-crafted all the marionettes himself, complete with detailed costumes and painted scenery. The collection of over 200 puppets survives intact and is displayed in a free permanent exhibition on the grounds.
