About Château Raoul
Château Raoul is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the Indre river, and the building from which the city of Châteauroux takes its name. First documented in 917 as a wooden stronghold of the Princes of Déols, the current stone structure dates largely from the 15th century, rebuilt by Guy III de Chauvigny in Gothic seigneurial style. The castle features two perpendicular wings connected by an octagonal spiral staircase tower, with decorated stone window frames and an accolade arch entrance.

The name "Châteauroux" literally means "Raoul's Castle" in Old French. When lord Raoul le Large rebuilt the fortress in stone in the early 12th century, the settlement that grew around it became known as "Château Raoul," which gradually contracted into "Châteauroux" — making the castle one of the rare French landmarks that gave its name to an entire city.
