About Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is a 17th-century French estate built between 1653 and 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s Superintendent of Finances. Fouquet assembled three of France’s greatest artists for the project: architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun, and garden designer André Le Nôtre. The château’s interior features lavishly painted ceilings, period furnishings, and an oval central dome, while the 33-hectare formal gardens stretch along a 3-kilometre axis with geometric parterres, reflecting pools, fountains, and statues.

On August 17, 1661, Fouquet hosted an extravagant party at the completed estate to honour Louis XIV. The evening featured a banquet served on gold and silver plates, the world premiere of Moliere's play 'Les Facheux' written specifically for the occasion, a ballet, and fireworks. Three weeks later, on September 5, Fouquet was arrested in Nantes by d'Artagnan, the real-life captain of the King's Musketeers who inspired Alexandre Dumas' fictional character.
