About Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame de Melun
Founded between 1016 and 1031 by King Robert II the Pious on the Île Saint-Étienne in the heart of Melun, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame is one of the finest examples of 11th-century Romanesque architecture in the Île-de-France region. Its 50-metre nave, built in a single construction campaign, features grand arcades and high windows characteristic of early Romanesque design, while the choir, rebuilt in the late 12th century, showcases the transition to Gothic art with elegant ribbed vaults and carved capitals adorned with palmettes and mythical bird-sirens.

The church once housed the famous Melun Diptych, painted by Jean Fouquet around 1450 for Étienne Chevalier, Treasurer of France. The Virgin panel, believed to depict Agnès Sorel (the king's mistress), is now in Antwerp, while the donor panel is in Berlin. A copy is displayed near the choir entrance.
