About Montargis Church of Saint Mary Magdalene
This 12th-century parish church, first documented in 1142, stands within the former feudal castle grounds of Montargis. A fire in 1525 destroyed much of the building, and the choir was rebuilt in a hall-church style with equal-height nave and aisles — a rare architectural choice in the Loire region, influenced by southern French and German Gothic models. Architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led a major 19th-century restoration that added the 56-meter bell tower spire visible across the town.

One of the stained glass windows depicts Saint Francis Xavier evangelizing Japan — reportedly the only such representation in any French church. This detail has attracted Japanese journalists and tourists specifically to Montargis to see it.
