About Franco-Chinese Friendship Historical Museum
This small museum in a 300-year-old townhouse documents a chapter of 20th-century history that few outside China know about. Between 1919 and 1921, around 100 young Chinese intellectuals settled in Montargis as part of the Diligent Work-Frugal Study movement, working in local factories while studying Western ideas. Several of them — including Deng Xiaoping, Zhou Enlai, and Chen Yi — went on to lead the People's Republic of China.

Deng Xiaoping arrived in France at age 16 in 1920 and worked ten-hour shifts at the Hutchinson rubber factory in nearby Chalette-sur-Loing, manufacturing galoshes. His original factory work card and residence permit are displayed on the first floor of the museum. He never learned French during his stay, which may have deepened his political radicalization.
