About Girodet Museum
The Girodet Museum occupies the Hôtel Durzy, a 19th-century mansion in central Montargis, and houses one of France's most complete collections dedicated to painter Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson (1767-1824). A pupil of Jacques-Louis David who won the Prix de Rome at 22, Girodet bridged Neoclassicism and Romanticism through portraits, mythological scenes, and history paintings. The museum holds 27 of his paintings and several hundred drawings spanning his full career.

In May-June 2016, during the renovation, the Loing river flooded catastrophically. The museum's reserves — stored in a former bank vault thought to be waterproof — were submerged, damaging approximately 3,000 of the 5,000 stored works. A rescue operation mobilized 56 volunteer conservator-restorers, and 70 priority paintings were sent to the national C2RMF conservation center for treatment.
