About Parc Monceau
2-hectare English-style landscape garden in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, originally commissioned in 1778 by Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres. The park was designed by painter Louis Carmontelle as a "garden of illusions" filled with architectural follies from different civilizations, then later redesigned by Scottish gardener Thomas Blaikie and further transformed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand under Napoleon III. Its most recognizable feature is the Naumachie, an oval pond bordered by a colonnade of Corinthian columns salvaged from a 16th-century mausoleum commissioned by Catherine de Medici.
