About Champs-Élysées
The Avenue des Champs-Élysées, stretching 1.9 kilometres from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, is widely regarded as the most famous avenue in the world. Its name, meaning "Elysian Fields" in French, evokes the paradise of Greek mythology. Designed in 1666 by André Le Nôtre, the royal gardener who created the gardens of Versailles, the avenue was transformed from marshland into a grand tree-lined promenade that became the ceremonial heart of Paris.

"Champs-Élysées" means "Elysian Fields" in French — the mythological paradise where Greek gods and dead heroes rested for eternity. Before its transformation, the area was actually swampy farmland used to grow vegetables, making the grandiose name originally somewhat ironic.
