The first prior appointed to run Saint-Ayoul was Robert of Molesme, a Benedictine monk sent from the abbey of Montier-la-Celle. He later left Provins to found the Abbey of Molesme in 1075, and ultimately established the Abbey of Citeaux in 1098 — the founding house of the Cistercian Order, which produced Bernard of Clairvaux and reshaped monastic life across Europe.
