About Royaumont Abbey
Royaumont Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery founded in 1228 by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) and his mother Blanche of Castille, located 30 km north of Paris in the Oise-Pays de France Regional Nature Park. The entire complex was built in just seven years and once housed up to 140 monks, with the largest Cistercian cloister in France. Today the abbey operates as a cultural foundation, hosting year-round concerts, dance performances, and artistic residencies in its restored medieval buildings.

Louis IX's father, King Louis VIII, specified in his will that the sale of his personal crowns, jewels, and rings would fund a new abbey. This unusual financing meant Royaumont was literally built from dissolved royal treasure.
