About Loches

A Fortress Forged in History

The Cité Royale de Loches dominates the town from a rocky spur, enclosed by nearly two kilometres of 12th-century ramparts. At its heart stands one of Europe's oldest and best-preserved Romanesque keeps, a 37-metre tower built by the fearsome Count of Anjou, Foulques Nerra. Later converted into a state prison, the keep held high-profile captives for centuries — including Cardinal La Balue, who spent eleven years confined in an iron cage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Loches

How long should I spend in Loches?

A half-day covers the Royal Citadel (keep, royal lodgings, and church). A full day adds the lower town, markets, and riverside walks. For day trips to Montrésor and the surrounding Indre Valley, plan 2-3 days.

How do I get to Loches from Tours?

Loches is about 45 minutes southeast of Tours by car. A regional bus service connects Tours and Loches. The nearest high-speed train station is Tours, which has TGV connections to Paris in about 1 hour.

What are the opening hours for the Royal Citadel?

The Cité Royale is open daily year-round except 1 January and 25 December. Hours vary by season: 9:30-17:00 (Nov-Feb), 9:30-18:00 (Mar-Apr, Sep-Oct), and 9:30-19:00 (May-Aug). Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

Is Loches worth visiting compared to Chambord or Chenonceau?

Absolutely. While Chambord and Chenonceau are Renaissance showpieces, Loches offers a deeper historical experience spanning a thousand years — with far fewer crowds and a more authentic atmosphere. Many visitors consider it a highlight of their Loire Valley trip.

When is the best time to visit Loches?

April to June and September to October offer the best combination of pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and long opening hours. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are ideal for combining a citadel visit with the excellent local market.
